Review: BREAKFAST Food worth getting out of bed for

BREAKFAST: Food worth getting out of bed for by Greg Duncan Powell
(Food and Wine section)

I don’t know about you, but I passionately dislike getting out of bed early in the morning, in fact, I think I’m allergic to it!
But there is one thing that is a must and that is breakfast, I can’t function without it. I can go without a coffee, I can go without a smoke, I don’t smoke by the way, but I can’t go without my brekkie!
Breakfast for me consists of a bowl of Special K, Bran and usually fresh strawberries and a very big glass of water, not very exciting, but it does the job, so when I saw this book in the library I was stoked…wow…you mean there’s actually more than just boring old cereal and toast for brekkie in the morning!
Well I may just have to start getting up early and trying out some of these recipes because some of them really are worth getting out of bed for!
There’s one in particular, Bacon and Jolly Boys on page 41, looks very quick and easy and more importantly, tasty!
However, Cabbage and Oil on Toast page 88, doesn’t sound like something I will be doing anytime soon, especially considering it has a clove of garlic in it as well, not the best breakfast food when working with the public!
So if you’re sick of cereal and toast for breakfast then this is the book for you, well, that’s providing you can pry it from my hands…

Review: Summer Cooking Fun

Longer daylight hours of summer create the perfect opportunity to relax and share a meal with family and friends. Your local library has a wide selection of cookery books offering menus for all occasions and dietary requirements. Whether you are seeking ideas for gluten free options, children’s school lunches, a barbecue with friends or ideas for a special celebration, come in to your library and see what is on offer. Remember if what you are looking for is not on the shelf, we can get it in for you, whether it is from one of our branch libraries or further afield!

Pizza modo mio
By John Lanzafame

In his book, John Lanzafame starts with the basics – pizza dough and variations including gluten free dough. There are a variety of sauce recipes before we get to the pizzas. The first section of recipes are traditional pizzas like the ‘Margherita’ and ‘pepperoni’ which are presented using fresh ingredients along with John’s interpretation, after all the book is modo mio (my way). Next are some of John’s own recipes for pizza, pizza pies and calzone. There are recipes for a children’s menu, which could easily double as hors d'oeuvre or a savoury snack and some interesting dessert pizzas. Desert pizzas are made with either a traditional base or a sweet pizza dough and with recipes like banana split, cherry and almond or peaches and cream there are some great combinations to match your menu and tastes.

The recipes are in no particular order and jump from page to page with delights like minestrone verde, overnight muffins, sang choy bow to luscious lasagne.
